Split (Poster Analysis)

How does the poster indicates the genre?
This movie genre is Horror/ Thriller. The poster indicates the genre by for instance the poster on the right shows an image of a man that is split in half and there are little people crawling inside of him, this goes well with the tag line, which is in both of these poster saying, "Kevin has 23 distinct personalities, the 24th is about to be unleash". this shows that its going to be a horror/thriller as the image corresponds with the tag line, like there are soo many little people going inside showing thriller as he shapeshifts into different personality also, the last line of the tag line says "the 24th is about to be unleash" could suggest horror as its beyond what a human body could do.
What can you say about the layout design, colours and font choice?
The layout design goes well with the genre as its very simple because it doesn't want to reveal too much information. Also, in a horror movie the image is normally on the left and covers almost half of the image, like the one on the left and the main focus is on the image as it is covert because it has a meaning behind it so, it has little information. I have analysed other horror/thriller movie posters and they conform to a dark colour scheme, this is because it represents death, evil, mystery, power, etc. Finally the font choice is very minimal which subverts to most horror/thriller movies as the movie title gives away the genre. For example, the colour red for a title could mean the movie will involve blood, which gives a hint to what genre it is.
What can you say about the photography? (Lighting, composition and framing)
The photography of the image can also help the audience know a little bit about the movie as well as attract them to watch the movie. The one on the left has a chiaroscuro lighting as the image is dark dominated by the shadow and the background is white this could suggest that the character is a mysterious person as well as evil because the connotation of dark colours. The one on the right is also a chiaroscuro lighting. The composition of the image in the left shows also that he could be hiding his true identity by only showing half of his face, this is could mean that know one knows what he is capable of. The colour of the eyes stand out of the poster on the left, it is very eye-catching, the colour blue could connate cold hearted and not feeling any remorse. Also, the cracks on the poster could show that his identity is being released, making it difficult to control the different personalities which matches tag line. The one on the right shows an more of an overt image of the movie, the splitting of the body that contains the little people could suggest that his personalities are way hard to maintain and don't know how to stop shapeshifting, this contrast well with the actors image looking like his shadow, which could mean that it is getting worse and doesn't know who he really is.
Is there a USP to the poster?
This magazine poster does have a unique selling point, like the tag line, its very intriguing and it makes the audience want to watch the movie as they want to know what they mean by the little information to give about the movie.
where might the campaign or individual posters be seen?
The movie poster can be seen advertised on the buses, this will catch the audiences attention as the use of colour is very bright and appeals to the eyes, so the audience would like to know a bit more about the movie. Also, they could see this poster on social media, as the actors who are in this film can also promote the movie as most of the actors who are in the movie like Jamie Fox. This would make their fans want to watch the movie.
what institutional information do you have? (studio logo, etc.)
The production company of this movie is; Blinding Edge Pictures and Blumhouse Productions. It is distributed by Universal Pictures. These companies that have helped make the movie Split are very well known and will help attract more audience to watch the movie as they are big in the film industry.
Who is the target audience and how are they attracted to the film?
By looking at both of these posters, this movie can be aimed at 15-25. This is because by looking at both of these poster, you would think it is horror/thriller genre which is like by audience at the age range of 15-25. however, the poster on the left would mainly attract those who are 15-18, this is because it has more colour to it compared to the one on the right and even the choice of colour used. The one on the right will appeal to those who are 18 or over, this is because the use of colour, it is very simple but goes with the image and tag line, in contrast to the one on the left it will not be appealing because it has no colour to it.
